Selecting the right Golf Travel Bag or Golf Travel Carrier
Let's start be defining the types of travel carriers/bags.
  • Soft Golf Travel Covers/Carriers
  • Hard Golf Travel Covers/Carriers
  • Golf Golf Travel Bag / Carrier Combos

      Decision 1 you must make.
Do you want to use your current golf bag and place it in something else or do you want to work with 1 item which is both your travel bag and your golf bag?

Advantages of a hard or soft cover/carrier.

      • You like your golf bag and do not want to change for travel.
      • Typically the carriers hold more than the 1 piece units.
      • More product to chose from with a wider price range

      Advantages of the Combo units.
      • Total weight, not much more that a standard carry bag.
      • Easier and less bulky to travel with.

If you chose to use a carrier/cover, do I use the hard or soft.

      Advantages to the soft cover

      • Total weight, much less than the harder covers.
      • Soft cover can usually hold more, since they are flexible.

      Advantages to the hard cover
      • Gives total club protection. The cases are very tough.
      • Easier to roll around since they are stiff.
      • Most airlines will pay for damage to the clubs in a hard case.
Your choices are...

Soft Golf Travel Bags

  • Ogio Straight Jacket - good case with wheels, cool looking bag, holds a lot of gear.
  • Izzo Compact - Soft bag, but each panel is hard making this almost a hard travel bag.
  • GTB Executive - Basic, non-sense cover, no wheels, does the job.
  • GTB Express - Enter point cover with wheels. Holds 9" bag.
  • GTB Legacy - Getting bigger, holds a great deal, clip strap for extra bag. Holds 9.5" bag.
  • GTB Chauffeur - Holds everything, leather accents. Holds 10" Bag.
  • GTB Deluxe Club Limo - Same as Club Limo with leather highlights and made from 1680 nylon, which is extremely strong. Holds 10.5" Bag.

Hard Golf Travel Bags

  • SKB Freedom - Top fits down inside bottom. Triangle in shape perfect for the standard carry bag.
  • SKB 12,14 or 16 - SKB has been in the case business for years. Durable, solid units. Choose 12 or 16 depending on the size of your golf bag.
  • GTB Vault - Made by Golf Travel Bags. Durable, solid and good looking. Bigger than the SKB 12, but a little smaller than the SKB 16.
  • Golf Guard/Deluxe - The most basic hard case you can get. Made by Doskcil Mfg who makes all kinds of sport cases.

Combo Golf Travel Bags

  • CargoGolf Pro Series - 100 is 6" top, 500,700 & 900 7.5" top, extremely durable one of the best
  • Trav-a-Lite - 3 Version: 14, Ultima, Ultima Pro; 14 is bare bones but protects clubs and gets the job done, Ultima is 14 but larger, easier to add and remove clubs, Ultima Pro is the Ultima with wheels and Umbrella hooks.

Problem: Need to carry 2 sets of clubs...
Possible solution: Try 2 Trav-a-Lite 14's and put them inside a Club Glove Burst with Wheels. One bag to deal with and the ultimate protection for your clubs.

Question: How much should I spend?
Answer: First you need to ask, how often am I going to use the travel bag or how much did I pay for my clubs. If you travel once or more a month and take your clubs, you should focus on high end bags like Club Glove. For moderate travel focus on Ogio, Burton or the high end GTB bags. For once a year, Physics or low end GTB will probably due the trick. Why invest $400 driver, $700 irons, $150 putter, etc and buy a $75 travel bag to protect your $1500 investment.

Question: Which combo bag is the most durable?
Answer: Here's our take on durablity 1-10, 10 being highest: Cargo Golf 10, Ogio RIG 10, Journeyman 9, Trav-a-lite 9, Club Porter 8, Tour Caddy 6. Durability is just one factor in your choice. You must also consider; pockets, storage capacity, easy of use and weight. Each of these bags has an area in which they shine.
